The World Naked Bike ride is more than just the most fun naked event of
the year.
Today in the news the world seems a wash in financial crisis. In so much
haste to declare imminent doom, the good news of the world financial
crisis is being overlooked.
Good news ? Yes, good news ?
From an ecological standpoint, there is already evidence that this
recession is giving parts of the environment a bit of a breather. The
decrease in housing construction in the USA has resulted in a decrease
of logging of the Ancient Bear Rain Forest in Canada. Population of
species such as grizzly, elk and wolf are on the rise. Car co-ops, car
pooling, public transit passengers and cycling are all up across the
world. Each car that does not get produced by the slowing automobile
sector is a small victory for the environment. Countless strip mining
operations in Argentina, Canada, USA and across the world are being
closed; oil companies in the tar sands in northern Alberta are shelving
their plans for new oil developments.
It is not just about the ecology.
Research has shown that the single most important thing that makes us
happy and improves our standard of living is not new cars and consumer
junk - it’s family and friends. The stock market crash might be a
blessing, a reminder that what really matters has very little to do with
the Dow Jones, but rather with our connection with a community. Instead
of investing in gadgets and gizmos and polluting oil wells, we should
have been investing in the things that make a stronger, healthier and
wiser society. In other words our selves, our families and our friends.
Instead of bailing out the auto empire and propping up the stocks of
banks and multinationals that have bankrupted the ecology of the planet,
lets find ways to live in better harmony with the planet. The problems
of rising unemployment can be tackled by work sharing instead of endless
industrial growth. An angry grid lock of more and more cars going
nowhere is no solution. Car culture is no culture. Its time to make
space for a happier, healthier social economy with more non motorized
transportation.A society valued in friends, family, adventure,
education, sharing, ecological sustainability, and things that really
make us stronger, healthier, wiser, and happier.
The world naked bike ride is a celebration of simplicity, a celebration
of pedal power and a celebration of the empowerment of the individual.
Help spread the contagious happiness of the World Naked Bike Ride.
The Southern portion of the World Naked Bike Ride is coming up soon. For
