Gravity fed domestic hot water systems are the easiest to understand.

The solar collectors heat up the cold water that is stored in the tank, much in the same way that an immersion heater warms the water in a boiler. When this is used the heated water is replaced by cold water and the process begins again. The solar collectors boil at very low temperatures, 30 degrees celsius, as the fluid is kept in a vacuum with8in the tube which is heated by solar radiation, negating the need for strong sunshine every day.

Back up electric heaters are also available to heat the water when hot water in the tank has been used and there is a need to heat water swiftly.

Installation

Installing these systems entails the use of a cold water supply in and a hot water supply out. Once used, cold water re-enters the tank and this is once again heated by the solar collectors. A controller ensures the efficient running of the system.
